Mobile Money is no longer just a consumer tool. It's become a major B2B payment rail across Africa. Here's how to integrate it cleanly into accounting.
Procura team · May 2026 · 6 min readThe GSMA State of the Industry Report on Mobile Money positions sub-Saharan Africa as the world's most active region on the topic, with a B2B share that is steadily growing.
Three factors explain the adoption. Speed (instant vs several days for a classic UEMOA bank wire). Inclusion (small suppliers without a formal bank account can receive a professional payment). Cost (fees below banking commissions on small amounts).
First challenge: traceability. A Mobile Money payment often goes out from a personal phone, with an SMS as the only audit trail. At reconciliation time, figuring out who a 47,500 XOF payment from three weeks ago belongs to is closer to archaeology than accounting.
Second challenge: matching against supplier accounts. Without a tool that automatically reconciles each Mobile Money transaction against an invoice, the balance drifts fast.
Third challenge: VAT. Mobile Money payments for VAT-eligible services have to be backed by a compliant invoice.
A good practice is to create per-operator sub-accounts in SYSCOHADA class 52. One sub-account for Orange Money, one for MTN MoMo, one for Wave, one for Moov Money. The exact sub-account number is set in the internal chart of accounts.
This structure makes it possible to track the balance per operator, spot variances quickly, and generate clean reports for management and auditors.
Orange Money, MTN MoMo, Wave and Moov Money all expose APIs to pull transaction statements automatically, initiate payments and receive real-time notifications.
An accounting platform that integrates these APIs can import transactions, suggest reconciliations, and initiate payments from the same screen. The day-to-day of accounting changes completely.
Procura integrates the Orange Money, MTN MoMo, Wave and Moov Money APIs natively. Transactions are imported automatically, the AI suggests matches, and payments can be initiated directly from Procura.
The matching SYSCOHADA entries are generated with the right split across class 52 sub-accounts. The result is a unified procurement cycle where Mobile Money is no longer a parallel channel but just another payment method.
